Every morning, J heads off early to work and its just me and the pups until I leave. It's been a great opportunity for me to work with the dogs without the presence of the "alpha male" around as a distraction. We work on "wait" and "on your mat" while I'm getting ready, then there's the mad rush to the kitchen for breakfast. Food obsessed Frankie rushes straight to the kitchen door, Bolo plays leap frog over the others, Ishka darts out and back again to tell me to hurry up.
Once in the kitchen, there's a quick game of musical crates - they all have their own crates, but they like to check out each others' crates just to be certain they're not missing out on some fancy interior decorating trick. Serving up breakfast is accompanied by a "musical" item, with Bolo playing percussion on his crate floor as well as being lead singer, with Frankie and Ishka "harmonising". Czar is too regal to participates in such shenanigans. Meantime, I have to remember who gets which bowl, who gets racing formula and who gets normal kibble, measure amounts of kibble (how fat is Frankie looking today?) and flax oil, and any medications (Ishka's anti-inflammatories). Some times I mess it up, spill things or mix up bowls. I'm not an early morning person!
While I eat my own breakfast, the pups all head outside for a toilet break. Frankie likes to watch me mournfully through the window, while Bolo and Czar play on the deck. Ishka likes to join in, but she wants any play to happen on her own terms - she lies on her back and woo woos at the boys to come to her.
Last thing before I leave for work, I take the pups down to the dog pen, where they are shut up for the day. When we first moved in, this was a challenge, with Bolo especially being very stubborn about it. But a small handle of bribes (kibble pieces) has encouraged the pups to see the pen as a good place to start the day. Especially Frankie - anything for food!! This is what our trip to the pen looked like today:
