Goodbye Bolo, 2005-2018

A week ago we said goodbye to Bolo.

The 3rd sarcoma, the tumour on his wrist, was getting bigger. The arthritis in his hips was more and more painful. At nearly 13, we had run out of viable options and were just steadily increasing the painkillers. Finally Bolo’s legendary stoicism was starting to crack.

We had known this was coming for several months now, and oh, it was a hard decision to come to. But now, our special boy is out of pain, running free over the rainbow bridge, in his silver harness. We have beautiful memories of a dog who came through hell, who had no reason to trust people, who accepted, loved and trusted our little family so hard.

A wheel dog gives the team strength and momentum, power to take off at the start chute. Last weekend, it felt like we had no strength and no momentum. We were buoyed by the love from our friends and family - people who sent us condolences, people who shared their memories of Bolo, people who reminded us what an amazing dog he was; a survivor, a clown, a loving friend. Dogs like Bolo, several people said, have the best stories, give you the biggest headaches, and take the biggest pieces of your heart.

Bolo will always be part of our strength and our momentum. His memory will give us the strength to go on and survive when things get tough. His memory will give us the momentum to keep fighting for better treatment of dogs.
